Senior Tips – September 2011
Religious Services In Senior Communities: Many senior communities (including independent living and assisted living) offer religious services on-site. Please let us know, during the free senior placement process, if this is something that’s important to you.
Advantages Of Using A Senior Placement Service: The biggest advantage of using a senior placement service is that it gives you the best chance of finding the best new home for the person you love. In addition, our placement service can save you hours of time, narrowing down hundreds of options in senior housing to the 2-3 that would be the best fit, offering the best value.
Advantages Of Independent Living Communities: One of the biggest advantages of independent living communities is that they’re often full of vibrant seniors. Most independent living communities also offer: meals, snacks, entertainment and activities, outings, and transportation to doctors and other appointments. If you need daily help with personal care, an agency can be brought in. If you need more assistance with medical care, an assisted living facility would probably be a better choice.
Making The Decision: If you’re helping your mom or dad or loved one find a senior community, in our experience, we’ve found that it’s best if you do the initial legwork, then present your first choice. This helps ease the strain on the senior.
Emergency Placement: Unfortunately, many of our senior placements occur on an emergency basis. A worker at the hospital or rehab center tells you that your mom or dad will be released in 3 days and can’t return home. Don’t panic…we’ve done the hundreds of hours of homework and are familiar with more than 200 senior facilities in the Denver metro area. We’ll narrow your choices down to the 2-3 that best fit your situation and then accompany you on tours of the independent living communities, assisted living facilities, personal care homes, or memory care options.
More Socialization: Most seniors who make the move into a 62+ independent living community immediately enjoy more opportunities for socialization. Moving out of the isolation of their home, condo, or apartment, they now have access to interactions with other residents of the community, with staff, and with the people they encounter on planned social outings.
The Best Reason For A Senior To Move: The best reason for a senior to move is safety. When your mom or dad is no longer safe at home (because of physical limitations, dementia, or both), it’s time to make a move. Today’s housing choices for seniors include: assisted living facilities, independent living apartments, and personal care homes.
Changing Demographics: Senior communities in Denver (independent living, assisted living, and personal care homes) become more popular every year, thanks to…advances in medicine. Because today’s seniors are living longer than their counterparts, they’re more in need of medical care and personal assistance.
Helping Seniors Pack For A Move: When you’re helping your mom or dad or loved one move into a senior community, it’s helpful to separate items (furniture, furnishings, and personal possessions) into 5 categories: keep and move into the new senior home; keep and distribute among family; sell at a garage sale or through an estate sale expert; donate to charity; or throw away.
The Best Senior Community In Denver: “What’s the best senior community in Denver?” is a question we’re often asked. The answer is, “The independent living, assisted living, or personal care home that best fits you or the senior you’re helping.” The best fit includes budget, location, services, and levels of care.
Is It Time For A Senior To Move?: If you, or the senior you love, is asking the question, “Is it time to move?” the answer is probably “yes.” Most seniors wait too long, out of fear or reluctance to change, and very few move too soon.
Working Together As A Family: When it’s time to plan a move for your elderly mother or father, it helps if all of the family members can be on the same page, rather than separately looking for solutions. That’s where our free assessment and placement services can come in handy. We can coordinate the tours of the senior communities and facilities, as well as facilitate communication.
Adjusting To A New Home: At independent living communities and assisted living residences, there are staff members who can suggest activities for new residents and make introductions to other residents who have similar interests and backgrounds.
Denver Is A Great City For Seniors: It’s always hard when a senior has to move to the Denver metro area to be closer to family, but Denver is a great city to live in…with good weather, friendly people, and lots of activities.
Independent Living vs. Assisted Living in Denver: If you’re considering a move, we can give you advice as to whether an independent living complex or an assisted living facility would better suit your needs, based on your capabilities and interests.
Broaching The Subject Of A Move For A Senior: If you need to talk about moving with your mother, father, or loved one, the best way to broach the subject is with a collaborative, not confrontational, approach.
Moving Into A New Senior Home: Most seniors tend to try to bring too many items into their new homes (independent living, assisted living, and personal care homes / rooms). To prepare for moving day, measure furniture and draw up a floor plan and diagram where everything will fit.
Free Senior Home Tours: As part of our free consultation, we accompany you on 2-3 personal tours so that we can look at the senior properties together, compare features, and answer any questions you might have.
62+ Living In Denver: Most of the independent living, personal care homes, and assisted living facilities in the Denver area have age restrictions, requiring you to be at least 62 years old.
